SportsBall kid collapses at Australian Open, players rush to assist

A dramatic moment unfolded on the first day of the Australian Open when a ball kid collapsed, prompting a pause in play as both players rushed to assist and medical help was called for.

The incident occurred during the match between Ekaterina Alexandrova, the No. 11 seed, and Zeynep Sonmez, just as Alexandrova was making a comeback from being a set and a break down. Sonmez had been on track to cause an upset, but Alexandrova managed to break serve twice to give herself a chance to serve out the second set at 5-3.

The ball kid collapsed at the side of the 1573 Arena court, leading to both players and court attendants immediately rushing over. The umpire called for medical assistance and announced to spectators that play would be temporarily suspended.

Commentator Catherine Whitaker mentioned, “The umpire is announcing an official pause in the match while help is on the way. The priority is the well-being of the ball kid, but this break is tough on Alexandrova, who was serving.”

Sonmez received praise for her reaction to the situation, with fans commending her sportsmanship and humanity.

The timing was unfortunate for Alexandrova as she was at a crucial moment in her serve when the stoppage occurred. Medical staff arrived, and the ball kid was assisted and taken off the court with applause from the crowd.

The interruption seemed to affect Alexandrova’s momentum, leading to her being broken when play resumed. Supporters of Sonmez inside the 1573 Arena cheered loudly for her.

Despite a strong start in the third set by Alexandrova, Sonmez remained composed and secured a remarkable 7-5 4-6 6-4 victory in front of her fans. Alexandrova will now focus on the women’s doubles event where she will team up with Venus Williams.

The weather in Melbourne was warm, with temperatures reaching 28 degrees Celsius, causing challenges not only for the ball kid but also for players like Canadian qualifier Liam Draxl, who required medical attention during his match in the men’s singles draw against Damir Dzumhur.
