“UK Government Condemns X’s Deepfake Feature”

Politics"UK Government Condemns X’s Deepfake Feature"

The response from Elon Musk’s company, X, to the scandal involving sexual images has been rejected by 10 Downing Street. The social media platform owned by the billionaire has introduced a new feature where its AI chatbot, Grok, can now create deepfake images as a “premium service”. The government has criticized this move, stating that it is inadequate and has warned Musk that all options are being considered to address the disturbing misuse of the platform.

Despite calls to do so, 10 Downing Street has not committed to discontinuing the use of the platform. Grok has faced backlash for enabling users to produce manipulated images of individuals, including minors, without their consent.

A spokesperson for Keir Starmer expressed disappointment, stating that turning an AI function that facilitates the creation of illegal images into a paid service is not a viable solution and is disrespectful to victims of misogyny and sexual violence. The Prime Minister’s firm stance is that X must take immediate action to address the issue.

The Labour Party is contemplating ending its association with X following the Prime Minister’s condemnation of the platform’s behavior. Party chairwoman Anna Turley emphasized the need for X to rectify the situation before any decision is made.

The government is collaborating with regulator Ofcom to address the inappropriate use of AI technology. Ofcom has initiated contact with Musk’s X and xAI amid concerns about sexualized content, particularly involving children, on the Grok platform.

Technology Secretary Liz Kendall has instructed Musk’s social media company to address the issue promptly, with full support for any enforcement actions deemed necessary by Ofcom. The UK government is resolute in its commitment to combatting offensive and abusive content online.

Users of X have reportedly prompted Grok to generate images of children in suggestive attire. Grok’s official statement acknowledged shortcomings in its safeguards and affirmed its commitment to preventing harmful content and complying with regulations to foster a safer online environment.
