Toronto Blue Jays pitcher Max Scherzer climbed to ninth place on the all-time strikeout list during Sunday’s game, surpassing the legendary Gaylord Perry. With a total of 3,535 career strikeouts, Scherzer achieved this milestone by striking out Cal Raleigh of the Seattle Mariners in the seventh inning.
The crowd of 42,039 fans at the stadium erupted in applause as Scherzer’s accomplishment was displayed on the scoreboard. Expressing his gratitude, Scherzer acknowledged the significance of moving up in the top 10 all-time strikeout rankings and appreciated the support from his teammates and fans.
During the game, Scherzer recorded a season-high 10 strikeouts, marking the 115th time in his career that he reached double-digit strikeouts in a single game. He also limited the Mariners to just one hit over seven innings, securing his first victory since the season opener in March.
At 42 years old, Scherzer’s impressive performance made history as only the third time a pitcher aged 42 or older pitched seven innings, struck out 10 or more batters, and allowed two or fewer baserunners in a game. Manager John Schneider praised Scherzer’s dominant outing, describing it as reminiscent of Scherzer’s peak performance levels.
Scherzer’s exceptional career has seen him play for various teams, including the Arizona Diamondbacks, Detroit Tigers, Washington Nationals, Los Angeles Dodgers, New York Mets, and Texas Rangers. As an eight-time All-Star and two-time World Series champion, Scherzer continues to solidify his place among baseball’s elite pitchers.
