Toronto Police Arrest Suspect in Scarborough MP Arson

PoliticsToronto Police Arrest Suspect in Scarborough MP Arson

A man, identified as Roshvin Crofton, aged 24, has been taken into custody by Toronto police for allegedly setting multiple cars on fire at the residence of a Scarborough MP. The charges against Crofton include arson causing damage to property, mischief over $5,000, conspiracy to commit an indictable offense, possession of incendiary material, and failure to comply with a probation order.

One of the vehicles involved in the incident, a 2025 Hyundai Sonata, was confiscated by the authorities. Police are now seeking information on the whereabouts of the vehicle prior to the suspected arson. Additionally, law enforcement is actively searching for a second suspect linked to the case.

The arson incident took place in the driveway of Liberal MP Salma Zahid’s home, who represents the federal riding of Scarborough Centre-Don Valley East. According to the police, an unidentified suspect approached the parked vehicles early on August 27, poured an accelerant on two cars, set them on fire, and fled the scene, resulting in damage to a third vehicle from the flames.

Following the arrest, Zahid expressed gratitude towards the Toronto police while acknowledging the ongoing investigation. She emphasized the lack of a known motive for the attack and stated that she would await further details before making additional comments.

Zahid, a member of the Liberal Party and the representative for Scarborough Centre since 2015, holds key roles within parliamentary committees. The incident has garnered condemnation from various political figures, including Prime Minister Mark Carney, who denounced the act as “cowardly violence and intimidation.”
