Ten individuals sustained injuries when a man plowed into a gathering in Newcastle, Australia, on Saturday, seemingly losing control of his vehicle, according to authorities. The 18-year-old driver was apprehended at the location in the Wallsend suburb, approximately 110 kilometers north of Sydney, the capital of New South Wales.
The incident took place as spectators were lining the local streets to bid farewell to the Newcastle Knights rugby league team, set to participate in the National Rugby League grand final in Sydney the following day. Among the injured, a five-year-old girl and a 67-year-old man were in critical condition, as per authorities.
Newcastle Mayor Gavin Morris remarked that the driver appeared to have mishandled the vehicle, possibly revving it in some manner. Police mentioned that early signs pointed towards the incident not being linked to terrorism.
