ArtRock Icon Sass Jordan, Trailblazer and Legend, Dies at 65

Renowned rock singer Sass Jordan, who hailed from Montreal and had a career that spanned nearly four decades, passed away at the age of 65. The sad news was confirmed by family spokesperson Eric Alper, who mentioned that Jordan was surrounded by her loved ones at the time of her passing.

A statement released by the family described Jordan as a unique force of nature, an irreplaceable source of light and joy. The cause of her death has not been disclosed.

Jordan’s musical journey began with the release of her debut album, “Tell Somebody,” in 1988, followed by winning the Juno Award for most promising female vocalist in 1989. Her second album, “Racine,” launched in 1992 and featured hits like “Make You a Believer.”

Throughout her career, Jordan received multiple Juno Award nominations for best female vocalist and also served as a judge on all six seasons of the reality TV show “Canadian Idol.”

Born on December 23, 1960, in Birmingham, England, Jordan was raised in Montreal. Geoff Kulawick, the former president of Stony Plain Records, praised her as a courageous and striking talent. Her last two albums, “Rebel Moon Blues” in 2020 and “Bitches Blues” in 2022, were recorded with her husband Derek Sharp during their time with Stony Plains.

Kulawick expressed admiration for Jordan’s exceptional voice and emotional connection with her audience, which garnered her a large fan base. He emphasized her ability to deliver powerful blues performances in her final records.

Derek Downham, a Canadian producer and songwriter, fondly recalled his interactions with Jordan, highlighting her positive energy and humor. Downham, who played drums alongside Jordan at a charity concert in Montreal, lamented the loss of her infectious laughter.

As one of the few female figures in the rock scene during her early days, Jordan played a significant role in paving the way for other women in the male-dominated industry. Downham praised her resilience and determination in breaking through barriers and setting an example for aspiring female artists.

Jordan’s legacy as a trailblazer and her unwavering compassion for others have left a lasting impact on the music industry. Her influence as an inspirational figure for young performers is a testament to her enduring spirit and her commitment to leading with love.
