A climber in British Columbia required a helicopter rescue after sustaining over 100 wasp stings while climbing in a remote area north of Vancouver.
The Lions Bay Search and Rescue team reported on social media that the female climber was on Redoubt Wall near Loggers Creek when she came into contact with the wasps.
Following concerns of a potential severe allergic reaction, a ground team was dispatched with emergency medical supplies. Due to the climber’s condition, it was evident that she could not hike out, prompting the request for a helicopter evacuation by North Shore Rescue.
Rescuers were deployed to the location to assist in airlifting the climber out through dense tree cover. Subsequently, the climber was transferred to B.C. Emergency Health Services for further medical attention.
Located approximately 40 kilometers north of Vancouver along the Sea to Sky Highway, Redoubt Wall served as the site of the incident. Lions Bay Search and Rescue emphasized the rapid escalation of wasp encounters into critical backcountry emergencies, especially when individuals sustain a high number of stings.
