Canada’s men’s basketball team is gearing up for the next phase of the 2027 FIFA World Cup qualifying games, but some notable players will be absent from the roster. General manager Rowan Barrett revealed the lineup for the upcoming Americas qualifiers, showcasing talents like Nickeil Alexander-Walker and Luguentz Dort from the Atlanta Hawks.
The team also includes Trae Bell-Haynes, Khem Birch, Marcus Carr, Mfiondu Kabengele, Kaza Kajami-Keane, Koby McEwen, David Muenkat, Nick Ongenda, Kelly Olynyk, Jackson Rowe, Thomas Scrubb, Keevan Veinot, and Kyle Wiltjer. Notably, Toronto Raptors’ RJ Barrett and Los Angeles Clippers’ Bennedict Mathurin will serve as ambassadors but will not participate in the games.
Despite plans to include Shaedon Sharpe, the Portland Trail Blazers guard suffered a meniscus tear, leading to his exclusion from the roster. The absence of key NBA stars like Shai Gilgeous-Alexander and Dillon Brooks was noted, with reasons undisclosed by Barrett, who mentioned various player circumstances affecting availability, such as injuries, fatigue, and contract obligations.
The Canadian team, currently ranked fifth globally, will face Panama and Argentina in the upcoming matches. Barrett emphasized the need for a balanced roster with FIBA-experienced players for effective execution in the games. Alexander-Walker, coming off a stellar season, will bring his skills to the court, while veteran Kelly Olynyk adds leadership and experience to the team.
The game in Quebec City holds special significance for Montreal native Luguentz Dort, who aims to shine in front of his hometown crowd. Barrett highlighted the importance of playing in familiar surroundings and the support from loved ones during such moments.
