A report by Pollution Probe highlights significant gaps in training and certification for technicians working on electric school buses, indicating a broader challenge for all types of EVs.
EVs demand specialized skills such as high-voltage safety, battery diagnostics, and charging infrastructure management, which are not adequately covered in traditional automotive service programs. The lack of standardized training and proprietary technology from manufacturers pose obstacles to technician skill development.
To address these challenges, initiatives like NAPA’s Next Drive program are training technicians in EV maintenance, covering a range of skills from basic electrical theory to battery troubleshooting. Additionally, colleges like Vancouver Community College and Centennial College are expanding their clean energy programs to meet the increasing demand for EV repairs.
Despite the hurdles, efforts are underway to integrate EV content into trade curricula and upskill technicians to bridge the gap in EV servicing. The goal is to equip technicians with the necessary expertise to support the EV industry’s growth and sustainability.
As the EV transition progresses, the importance of training skilled technicians in EV maintenance is paramount for ensuring the longevity and efficiency of electric vehicles, aligning with the broader shift towards clean energy solutions.
