An eruption of applause filled Canada Life Centre on Saturday night when local resident Simon Hildebrandt made a remarkable three-point shot. This shot secured the Winnipeg Sea Bears their inaugural Canadian Elite Basketball League championship. The crowd and players rejoiced with confetti raining down and the anthem “We Are the Champions” blaring through the speakers following the team’s 98-84 victory.
Reflecting on his unexpected winning shot, Hildebrandt expressed, “It was super random. I had no thoughts, no emotions; it all went blank, and then we began celebrating.” This triumph marked Winnipeg’s fourth season in the CEBL, with the team’s inception in 2023 seeing the late Chad Posthumus, also from Winnipeg, scoring the game-winner.
Hildebrandt paid tribute to Posthumus, acknowledging his significance to the organization and the city. Head coach Mike Raimbault shared a poignant moment with Posthumus’s parents during the postgame festivities, underscoring the emotional connection and respect for the late player.
Xavier Moon, the Sea Bears guard, stood out in the championship game, scoring a game-high 29 points and earning the CEBL finals MVP title. Moon’s performance was particularly commendable given the team’s challenges, such as the absence of key players like Teddy Allen due to an unfortunate incident and the departure of other players for overseas opportunities.
Despite facing adversity, the Sea Bears showcased resilience, overcoming obstacles to secure their victory in the playoffs. The championship game against the Brampton Honey Badgers, initially planned as a best-of-three series, was condensed to a single game due to court conditions, resulting in a thrilling winner-take-all showdown.
Moon, a seasoned player with previous CEBL success, emphasized the significance of winning in a city that had never experienced playoff triumphs before. The Sea Bears also set a new attendance record with 12,519 fans in attendance, surpassing the previous league record.
Hildebrandt expressed hope that young basketball enthusiasts in Winnipeg would be inspired by the team’s success, emphasizing the potential for local talent to shine on a national stage. The Sea Bears’ championship victory not only brought joy to fans but also highlighted the dedication and hard work of the team throughout the season.
