“Newfoundland and Labrador Seeks Feedback on E-Scooter Safety”

National"Newfoundland and Labrador Seeks Feedback on E-Scooter Safety"

The Newfoundland and Labrador government is inviting feedback from the public regarding new road safety regulations due to the increasing use of e-scooters and e-bikes. Government Services Minister Mike Goosney emphasized the necessity for legislation to keep pace with technological advancements to prevent potential incidents. Concerns raised by parents in Labrador west, such as Jackie Granter and Kesha Morgan, highlight the urgency for regulating these modes of transportation to enhance safety.

Granter and Morgan observed a rise in motorized vehicles on roads but expressed worries about unsafe operations and the lack of helmet use among riders. They emphasized the need for safety measures and proper training for riders, advocating for changes to the Highway Traffic Act by the provincial government.

To gather public opinions, an online survey is available on engagenl.ca, addressing various safety aspects including age requirements, helmet usage, education, and operational rules for e-scooters and e-bikes. The province is also accepting feedback through email or mail submissions to the Government Services department. With plans to introduce regulatory changes in the fall, Minister Goosney encouraged input from all stakeholders to shape effective regulations.

Recent data from a Canadian Pediatric Society survey revealed concerning statistics on e-scooter-related injuries, prompting calls for stricter safety measures. Pamela Fuselli from Parachute Canada emphasized the seriousness of these vehicles, recommending against children under 16 operating them. Fuselli highlighted the collective responsibility of manufacturers, legislators, and enforcement agencies in ensuring the safety of e-scooter users.

Julia Kent of the Canadian Automobile Association Atlantic underscored the need for regulations to catch up with the rapid adoption of micro-mobility vehicles, citing the escalating number of severe injuries from e-scooter accidents. Kent stressed the importance of rules regarding helmets, speed limits, and usage areas to mitigate risks associated with these vehicles. Despite the challenges of implementing regulations, she expressed confidence in the feasibility of achieving safer e-scooter practices.
