“Petition to Oust U.S. Ambassador from Canada Gains Momentum”

Politics"Petition to Oust U.S. Ambassador from Canada Gains Momentum"

A petition initiated by a woman demanding the expulsion of U.S. Ambassador Pete Hoekstra from Canada has gained significant traction, surpassing initial expectations. The online petition, set for submission to the House of Commons, has garnered over 70,000 signatures, demonstrating widespread displeasure with Hoekstra’s alignment with President Trump’s policies. The petitioner, Lee Walker, highlighted concerns about Hoekstra’s statements undermining Canada-U.S. relations and his controversial remarks on annexation.

Walker emphasized the weight of an ambassador’s words and the potential impact of normalizing such rhetoric. Hoekstra’s comments on trade issues and political interference prompted the petition, urging the Canadian government to review U.S. diplomatic involvement in domestic affairs. Despite the U.S. Embassy declining to comment directly on the petition, tensions persist amid ongoing trade negotiations between the two nations.

The petitioner stressed the importance of respecting Canada’s sovereignty, stating that it should not be subject to negotiation. Trade talks between Canada and the U.S. have been intense, with looming tariff threats adding pressure to reach a resolution. The petition, to be presented in Parliament by Green Party Leader Elizabeth May, aims to convey a message against diplomatic misconduct, signaling a call for accountability. Walker remains hopeful that the petition will prompt action, emphasizing the significance of addressing concerns raised by an ambassador’s conduct.
