Reform UK and the Conservative Party have been criticized by Sadiq Khan for their negative stance towards the essence of London. The Mayor of London accused both parties of opposing the city’s diversity, progressiveness, and prosperity, as well as its Muslim Mayor. Speaking at the Fabian Society’s annual conference, Khan called on his Labour colleagues to stand with him in promoting the advantages of immigration.
Khan expressed concern about the rise of far-right populism and nativism, highlighting the threat to the idea of a diverse, united, and prosperous society. He referenced the White House’s assertion that Europe faces ‘civilisational erasure’ and pointed out similar messages being spread by far-right groups across Europe and within the UK by Reform and the Tories.
Defending London passionately, Khan emphasized that the city’s success infuriates its critics. He condemned the fabrication of lies and the manipulation of fear to serve political interests, calling it not just false but also cruel and dangerous. Khan stressed the importance of countering the narrative that diversity is detrimental to society and advocating for the positive impact of immigration.
Regarding the positive aspects of immigration, Khan highlighted the contributions of generations of migrants and refugees in shaping London into the vibrant city it is today. He emphasized that immigration has enriched lives by influencing various aspects of culture and daily life in the city.
