A woman’s vision was successfully restored through an innovative treatment involving the injection of a gel into her eye by specialists at Moorfields Eye Hospital in London. Nicki Guy, 47, had been experiencing vision loss due to hypotony, a condition causing low eye pressure, which had impacted her ability to drive. Following the treatment involving injections of hydroxypropyl methylcellulose (HPMC), Nicki regained her vision and expressed gratitude for the remarkable outcome.
Nicki, a communications officer for the Thomas Pocklington Trust, had been dealing with eye issues since 2019, stemming from chronic anterior uveitis diagnosed after the birth of her son. Her condition had led to complications, including redness, pain, and blurred vision. While traditional treatment involving silicone oil injections posed risks of eye toxicity, the use of HPMC gel proved to be a safe and effective alternative in restoring eye pressure and vision.
Under the care of consultant ophthalmologist Harry Petrushkin at Moorfields, Nicki and seven other patients underwent the gel injections over a year. The results were described as transformative, with Nicki experiencing a significant improvement in her vision, allowing her to consider driving again and engage in activities she had missed due to her condition.
