Labour’s Angela Rayner is set to caution party leaders against preventing Andy Burnham from contesting as an MP. Rayner, a former Deputy Leader, is reportedly in favor of Burnham’s bid for a return to the Commons and is expected to advocate for members’ rights to decide in a speech to party supporters.
The Mayor of Greater Manchester, Andy Burnham, who has openly expressed his desire to lead the Labour Party, faces a decision on Saturday regarding whether to run in an upcoming by-election following Andrew Gwynne’s resignation as the MP for Gorton & Denton in Greater Manchester due to health reasons and a previous controversy involving offensive WhatsApp messages.
Gwynne’s departure paves the way for Burnham to potentially challenge Keir Starmer for leadership. However, Burnham’s candidacy would need approval from Labour’s national executive committee, which is predominantly supportive of Starmer. Several MPs have called for Burnham not to be blocked from running, emphasizing the importance of letting local members choose the candidate.
Various figures, including trade union leaders and MPs, have voiced support for Burnham’s candidacy, stressing the need for a democratic process in selecting the candidate for the Gorton and Denton by-election. Health Minister Stephen Kinnock praised Burnham’s leadership in Greater Manchester and highlighted the importance of following party rules and procedures in the selection process.
As of now, no candidates have officially declared their intention to stand, and the selection process will adhere to established party guidelines.
