A man has been sentenced to life in prison for attempting to assassinate Donald Trump while he was playing golf at his Florida golf course. Ryan Routh, aged 60, meticulously planned the attack before aiming a rifle through bushes at the former Republican presidential candidate on September 15, 2024, at his West Palm Beach country club.
During Routh’s trial, a secret service agent guarding Trump on the golf course testified that he spotted Routh before Trump appeared. Routh pointed his rifle at the agent, who retaliated by firing shots, prompting Routh to drop his weapon and flee without shooting.
After a two-and-a-half-week trial last September, a jury swiftly convicted Routh on five charges, including attempting to assassinate a significant presidential candidate and assaulting a federal officer. Following the guilty verdicts, chaos erupted in the courtroom as Routh attempted to harm himself with a pen, leading officers to remove him promptly.
Prosecutors, in a sentencing memorandum submitted last month, stated that Routh has not taken responsibility for his actions and recommended a life sentence in line with federal sentencing guidelines.
