A family is speaking out after their teenage daughter passed away due to a blood clot triggered by the contraceptive pill. Áine Rose Hurst, 19, initially thought her severe headache was a result of a night out but tragically died two days later.
An inquest revealed that Áine had been advised to stop taking the pill due to high blood pressure, but her GP later prescribed it again. Her parents, Graham and Kerry, are now warning other young women about the potential risks of the contraceptive pill and advocating for changes in NHS guidelines. They have established ARCS – The Áine Rose Contraceptive Safety Foundation – to raise awareness in her honor.
Kerry described Áine as a loving and vibrant individual who cherished her family. Despite a happy childhood with her brother Charlie in Bolton, Greater Manchester, Áine’s life was cut short by the devastating health complication.
The family urges for more stringent checks before prescribing the contraceptive pill to individuals with a history of high blood pressure. They hope that by sharing Áine’s story, they can prevent similar tragedies and honor her memory.
