Prime Minister Sir Keir Starmer has announced plans to provide financial support to ensure the continuation of the World Snooker Championship at The Crucible arena in Sheffield. The current contract for hosting the tournament at the venue is nearing its end.

Local council leaders are eager to secure the championship’s future at The Crucible, although Barry Hearn, the president of Matchroom Sport, has proposed exploring alternative venues.

The government has intervened by offering funding, with Prime Minister Starmer engaging in discussions about the tournament’s future during a recent visit to The Crucible alongside council officials and local partners.

According to a source cited by The Sheffield Star, negotiations are progressing rapidly following the Prime Minister’s involvement, emphasizing the significance of his support and commitment to the event.

The Crucible has been the host venue for the Snooker World Championships since 1977, but uncertainty looms due to the contractual situation. Hearn has hinted at the possibility of moving the tournament to Saudi Arabia if his prize money demands are not met.

He stressed the importance of government support in maintaining the event in the UK and specifically in Sheffield, highlighting the need for alignment between stakeholders to ensure the championship’s sustainability.

The 2026 World Snooker Championship is scheduled to commence on April 18 and last until May 4, with Zhao Xintong, the Chinese player, defending his title after defeating Mark Williams in the previous year’s final.
