Flight attendant handles mid-air toilet malfunction with unconventional solution

NationalFlight attendant handles mid-air toilet malfunction with unconventional solution

During a flight from California to Manila, a flight attendant had to handle an unexpected situation when a malfunction caused human waste to block the cabin toilet. In a video circulating on YouTube, a crew member can be seen using a drinks carton to remove the waste from the toilet and dispose of it in the sink.

Instead of diverting the Boeing 777 to Guam, which was six hours away, airline officials decided that manually clearing the waste was the best course of action. This intervention proved successful, allowing the plane to land in Manila without further issues.

While the incident caused inconvenience to passengers and crew, the airline acknowledged the professionalism of its staff in managing the situation. Despite the frustration among the crew members, the flight attendants filed an incident report with their union, expressing concerns about worker safety and dignity being compromised.

An internal investigation is underway to address the incident, with the airline refraining from commenting on specific claims until the investigation is completed. Matthew Klint, a contributor to Live and Let’s Fly, highlighted the challenges of dealing with lavatory malfunctions during long flights, emphasizing the complexity of the situation.

Klint noted that the crew’s decision to handle the waste manually was a pragmatic choice given the circumstances. He emphasized the difficulties of dealing with biohazard improvisation and the lack of specific training for such situations. Despite the challenges, the crew’s actions were seen as necessary to ensure the safety and well-being of everyone on board.
