“Windows 10 Support Ending: Take Action Now!”

Tech"Windows 10 Support Ending: Take Action Now!"

If you own a PC running on Windows, it is advisable to check which operating system it is currently using. Microsoft is set to end all free support for Windows 10 in just 7 days. After October 14, continuing to use Windows 10 could leave your devices vulnerable to bugs and cyber threats.

Microsoft has been cautioning users to upgrade to Windows 11 or consider opting for Extended Security Updates, which can provide protection for Windows 10 PCs for the next three years.

Ahead of the imminent support cutoff, the team at Which? is offering new guidance to users.

According to Which?, an estimated 21 million individuals in the UK may still be using a laptop or computer with Windows 10. This statistic is significant and could attract cybercriminals looking to exploit this situation.

Of particular concern is the revelation by Which? that 26% of Windows 10 users plan to continue using the operating system even after the support ends.

Once Microsoft stops offering free support, security updates and critical patches will no longer be provided, significantly increasing the security risks for devices still running Windows 10.

As highlighted by Which?, unsupported software like Windows 10 often becomes a target for hackers and criminals seeking to exploit vulnerabilities and steal data.

Therefore, Which? is strongly advising users to take action promptly to ensure their devices remain secure.

Lisa Barber, Editor of Which? Tech, emphasized the urgency, stating, “Our research indicates that many individuals may not be prepared for the discontinuation of Windows 10 next week. It is crucial for users with Windows devices to verify their operating system and take necessary steps if it is Windows 10 or older to prevent becoming more susceptible to cyber threats and scams.”

Which? provides the following recommendations for users:

If your PC is compatible with Windows 11, consider upgrading from Windows 10 for free. The transition to Windows 11 is straightforward, and users should find it familiar.

If upgrading is not an option, users can opt for a one-year extension for Windows 10 through Microsoft’s Extended Security Updates (ESU) program. This extension will offer users time to explore long-term solutions, such as switching to a different operating system or purchasing a new device running Windows 11.

It is important to note that the one-year extension is not automatic; users must choose to enroll. Enrollment is free if users agree to back up their Windows settings on OneDrive. Alternatively, users can use Microsoft loyalty points (if available) or pay a one-time fee.

If you are ready to upgrade to a new device, consider how to handle your old laptop or PC.
