“UK to Ditch Copper Landlines for Digital Voice by 2027”

Tech"UK to Ditch Copper Landlines for Digital Voice by 2027"

The era of traditional copper landlines strung across UK streets is coming to an end as the country gears up for a full transition to “Digital Voice” services by January 2027. This shift signifies the phasing out of the outdated copper-wire phone network.

Once the deadline hits, households will shift towards making calls through their broadband connections. This move marks one of the most significant transformations in UK communications in years. To expedite the transition away from aging infrastructure, BT’s Openreach network is actively implementing its “Stop Sell” initiative.

Under this initiative, major providers like BT, Sky, Plusnet, and TalkTalk will no longer be allowed to offer new copper-based broadband and phone services in affected regions. The Stop Sell notifications have already been rolled out in various parts of the UK, with Openreach confirming further expansions impacting 238 exchange locations and around 1.69 million premises.

Following these updates, customers seeking to upgrade, switch, or acquire new services will be required to transition to full fiber broadband and digital phone services instead of relying on the traditional copper network. Openreach clarified that the Stop Sell program is triggered when the majority (75%) of premises connected to a specific exchange have access to ultrafast Full Fiber.

By early June, the Stop Sell regulations will be enforced across 1,432 exchanges nationwide, affecting about 14.2 million properties. James Lilley, Openreach’s Managed Customer Migrations Director, emphasized the importance of the Stop Sell program in propelling the UK towards a modern full fiber future. As the capabilities of copper for modern communications diminish, the focus is on migrating people to more advanced, future-proof technologies.

The gradual phase-out of legacy copper-based services in areas with widespread fiber availability aims to assist customers and providers in transitioning to faster, more reliable digital infrastructure. This approach also reduces the complexity and costs associated with maintaining both old and new networks ahead of the imminent shutdown of the legacy copper-based Public Switched Telephone Network (PSTN) less than eight months away.

Digital Voice, BT’s advanced home phone service, leverages broadband technology to connect homes digitally, offering contemporary features like Multi Call, three-way conference calling, and call diversion to any phone number, including mobile phones. The call quality is expected to be significantly enhanced with Digital Voice, requiring a compatible Digital Home phone for optimal utilization.

For most households, the transition to Digital Voice will not alter their phone usage habits. The cost of the new Digital Voice and broadband service is integrated into a single package price, with no additional fees for Digital Voice services.
