A significant shift is approaching in how UK households communicate with their loved ones. Starting in January of the upcoming year, consumers nationwide will transition from the traditional copper-wire phone lines, known as the Public Switched Telephone Network (PSTN), to a new technology known as Voice over Internet Protocol (VoIP).
VoIP is a modern system that utilizes an internet connection for making phone calls, replacing the outdated analogue wiring. Despite initial concerns, there are numerous advantages to embracing this change, such as improved call quality, enhanced reliability, and additional features like spam call protection and call forwarding.
While the transition has been in the works for some time, a recent report from the telecommunications experts at Phonely reveals that a significant portion of UK adults over 50 are unaware of the impending shutdown of traditional landlines, despite repeated alerts from the industry and the extended deadline of January 31, 2027.
Phonely warns that this lack of awareness may result in a surge of last-minute upgrades in 2026, leading to potential issues like equipment shortages, delays in installations in rural areas, and increased pressure on telecommunication providers.
“With less than a year remaining until the permanent switch-off of the UK’s analogue landline network, research indicates that millions of individuals over the age of 50 are still unaware of the upcoming change,” stated Phonely.
For many older households that prioritize stability and reliability, this transition signifies a significant adjustment. As the 2027 deadline looms closer, experts advise against delaying the switch.
“The extension to 2027 has fostered a false sense of security,” remarked Bryn Thompson, Director at Phonely. “The fact that nearly six in ten individuals over 50 are unaware of this transition should be a concern for all stakeholders. Waiting until the last moment could lead to chaos.”

Contact your telephone provider to understand the switch process and ensure they are aware of any special requirements you may have.”
So, what exactly is changing with landlines, and how can you make the switch?
The UK’s copper-based PSTN network is being phased out and replaced by digital VoIP services. After January 31, 2027, traditional analogue landlines will cease to function, and calls will be conducted through broadband connections.
While many younger households have transitioned to mobile phones, a significant number of individuals over 50, especially in rural areas, still rely on their landlines for daily communication, emergencies, and telecare alarm systems. In some regions, it remains the most dependable means of staying connected.
Telecommunication providers are expected to reach out to customers directly to explain the transition process. The switch itself should not incur additional costs. In most cases, households will only need a broadband connection and a compatible phone for the new system.
However, concerns have arisen regarding internet access, as some older consumers are not yet online. Solutions for those without internet access are being explored before the 2027 deadline, and individuals worried about the transition are advised to contact their phone provider to explore available options.
