“UK-Greece Pact Targets Human Trafficking Networks”

Politics"UK-Greece Pact Targets Human Trafficking Networks"

A groundbreaking migration agreement between the United Kingdom and Greece has been celebrated as a significant step in combatting human trafficking.

During a visit to Athens, Foreign Secretary Yvette Cooper endorsed the pact, emphasizing its potential to disrupt criminal smuggling operations. The UK is set to offer training to Greek authorities to help disrupt the flow of small boats utilized in perilous Channel crossings.

Additionally, the UK government is intensifying efforts in North Africa to deter risky crossings into Europe. Ms. Cooper unveiled fresh funding for initiatives in Algeria, Egypt, and Tunisia, aimed at redirecting thousands of potential migrants towards local employment opportunities.

Regarding the agreement, the Foreign Secretary, following discussions with Greek Foreign Minister George Gerapetritis, stated, “Illegal and hazardous boat crossings are compromising border security in both the Channel and the Mediterranean. Combatting illegal migration and targeting the lucrative criminal networks involved is a top priority for both the UK and Greece. Organized immigration crime poses a global threat, necessitating a comprehensive governmental approach.”

Ms. Cooper added, “At the Foreign Office, we are expanding our collaboration with other nations to address this issue at all stages of the human smuggling routes into Europe.”

Recent joint efforts between Greek authorities and the National Crime Agency (NCA) led to the successful dismantling of an Athens-based network involved in migrant smuggling and document forgery. This operation resulted in eight arrests, the raid of a travel agency linked to the main suspect, the shutdown of a sophisticated forgery lab, and the confiscation of numerous counterfeit documents and forgery equipment.

A funding allocation of £1.5 million will bolster development projects in North Africa under the North Africa Migration and Development (NAMAD) program. This initiative has already provided training and essential support in health and social services to over 17,000 individuals.
