Three cities in England and a market town in Wales are in contention to be named the UK City of Culture for 2025. Southampton, Bradford, Durham, and Wrexham, the latter aspiring to gain city status this year, are vying for the title, with the potential to receive substantial investment if selected.
The Arts Minister, Lord Stephen Parkinson, emphasized the significant role of culture in fostering growth and unity within towns and cities. He highlighted the positive impact experienced by Coventry, this year’s host city, which saw a boost of over £172 million in funding for various cultural events and infrastructure developments.
A panel led by Sir Phil Redmond, known for creating the TV show Brookside, will assess the shortlisted locations before making their final recommendation. Redmond stressed the transformative power of culture in driving economic and social progress, citing previous City of Culture winners like Derry-Londonderry, Hull, and Coventry.
The Culture Secretary, Nadine Dorries, is set to reveal the 2025 winner in May, as the competition occurs every four years. The chosen city will have the opportunity to showcase its cultural richness and benefit from the associated investments and developments.
