“Transgender Women Face Exclusion from Olympic Women’s Competitions”

Sports"Transgender Women Face Exclusion from Olympic Women's Competitions"

Transgender women are set to be excluded from participating in women’s competitions at the Olympic Games. The International Olympic Committee (IOC) has made this decision based on a scientific evaluation revealing the inherent physical advantages of being biologically male.

According to a report from The Times, the IOC is expected to unveil its new policy early next year. Previously, the IOC permitted transgender women to compete with reduced testosterone levels, leaving the final decision to individual sports federations.

Under the leadership of new president Kirsty Coventry, the IOC’s position is evolving to prioritize safeguarding the integrity of women’s sports. Dr. Jane Thornton, the committee’s medical and scientific director and a former Canadian Olympic rower, presented the initial findings of the review at a recent meeting in Lausanne, Switzerland.

Dr. Thornton reportedly highlighted that even after undergoing treatments to lower testosterone levels, athletes born male retain physical advantages. Attendees described the presentation as factual and well-received, emphasizing the scientific evidence presented.

The IOC’s current stance on its website underscores support for all qualified athletes, irrespective of gender identity, as determined by the respective International Federations (IFs). However, the recent boxing tournament at the Paris Olympics sparked controversy when two disqualified boxers, Imane Khelif of Algeria and Lin Yu-Ting of Taiwan, both claimed gold medals.

In response, World Boxing, the newly recognized international federation for boxing, has implemented mandatory sex testing. Khelif is required to undergo testing before being allowed to compete in the female category.

It is anticipated that the IOC will announce its updated policy in early 2026, possibly coinciding with the Winter Olympics session in February. Coventry emphasized the importance of protecting women’s sports while considering the diverse requirements of different disciplines and involving international federations with expertise in this domain.

Moreover, Sky has reduced the price of its Essential TV and Sky Sports bundle ahead of the 2025/26 season, offering savings of £192 and broadcasting over 1,400 live matches across various leagues. Sky will also show a minimum of 215 live Premier League matches in the upcoming season, an increase of up to 100 games compared to the previous season.
