On July 26, 1945, Harlan Twible found himself on the USS Indianapolis, unknowingly carrying crucial components for the world’s first nuclear weapon to scientists on Tinian. Despite feeling insignificant about his mission to Guam, a southern Pacific island, Twible’s fate took a drastic turn when the ship was attacked by Japanese torpedoes from the submarine I-58, causing it to sink in a mere 12 minutes.
Taking charge amidst the chaos, Twible gave the order to abandon ship, leading to the survival of around 900 sailors while tragically losing 300 to the depths. Survivors faced a new threat in the form of relentless shark attacks, causing fear and despair among the crew.
Struggling to maintain hope and unity, Twible and his companions fought off sharks using only their hands, realizing that staying together increased their chances of survival. In a desperate move, Twible disposed of the deceased from the wreckage to bolster the spirits of his fellow survivors.
