Police officers, paramedics, and an air ambulance swiftly responded to an incident involving schoolchildren who fell from the upper window of a double-decker bus. Emergency crews hurried to the scene on Bolton Road in Ashton-in-Makerfield on Wednesday, January 7, following the event that resulted in “some sustaining potentially life-altering injuries.”

According to a statement from Greater Manchester Police, it is believed that three high school students fell through a window on the top deck of a bus. The authorities confirmed that all three individuals have been transported to the hospital with potentially serious injuries.

The official statement released by the police stated, “Emergency services are currently managing an incident in Ashton-in-Makerfield this evening (Wednesday, January 7, 2026). Three high school students have fallen through a window on the top deck of a school bus on Bolton Road. They have all been taken to the hospital with potentially serious injuries.”

The road has been reopened following the completion of initial investigations by emergency services teams. The inquiry is at its initial stages, with efforts underway to establish the full circumstances surrounding the incident.

Inspector Simon Barrie of the Wigan District emphasized, “This is a significant incident that will cause disruptions; our primary focus is ensuring the children receive necessary treatment at the hospital. Fortunately, we do not believe their injuries are life-threatening at this time.”

He added, “While this seems to be an unfortunate accident currently, we will conduct inquiries to ascertain the circumstances and collaborate with partners.”

A local councilor representing Ashton-in-Makerfield South Ward expressed, “I have conversed with our local police team this afternoon. As per information, three young individuals have fallen from an upper-level side window of a school bus and have been taken to Manchester Children’s Hospital, some with potentially life-altering injuries.”

The councilor further mentioned, “The road has now been reopened post the completion of investigations. I have reached out to the schools involved to ensure they receive council support if required. My thoughts and best wishes go out to the children and families impacted.”
