“Snow Blitz: Storm Goretti to Hit UK with 100 Locations Facing Snowfall”

Updates"Snow Blitz: Storm Goretti to Hit UK with 100 Locations Facing Snowfall"

The Met Office has stated that snow will make a comeback in nearly 100 locations by the day’s end.

With temperatures plummeting rapidly, a cold snap is expected to persist through the weekend, impacting regions in England, Wales, and Scotland with blizzard conditions and strong winds as Storm Goretti approaches. Various warnings, including two amber alerts, have been issued, anticipating significant snowfall in the upcoming hours.

According to the Met Office, the storm will disrupt travel across roads, air travel, and public transportation services, with potential power outages exacerbating the risks. Some communities might face isolation, and mobile phone services could be affected, cautioned the weather agency.

Nearly 96 areas are under snow warnings today, with extensive snowfall anticipated in many parts of England and Wales, especially expecting 30cm in the Midlands and Wales.

Exposed areas may experience gusts up to 90mph, posing a potential life-threatening risk in the south-west.

The recent cold spell resulted in over 1,000 school closures across the UK this week, and Storm Goretti is predicted to bring a complex weather event starting from midday on Thursday, according to the Met Office. Additionally, heavy and persistent rain is expected to sweep across eastern and northern England from Thursday night to Friday.

The Met Office warns, “Storm Goretti is likely to bring heavy snow leading to disruptions and challenging travel conditions. A deep low-pressure system will traverse the southern UK on Thursday and Friday, ushering in a mix of rain, snow, and strong winds.

“Intense snowfall is expected over elevated terrain in south Wales later on Thursday, spreading as snow over parts of England and Wales during Thursday night. Accumulations of 5-10 cm are probable in some regions, with up to 20 cm in certain areas, particularly in higher elevations.

“Strong winds may cause snow drifting. The rain and snow will progressively move eastwards on Friday. This weather system has been labeled by Meteo France, with the most potent winds linked to Storm Goretti expected over northern France.

“Wintry conditions with snow may lead to delays and hazardous driving situations. To ensure safety for yourself and others, plan your travel route, check for delays and road closures, adjust your travel plans if needed, allocate extra time for preparation and car inspection before departure, and pack essential items in your vehicle in case of delays (such as warm clothing, food, water, a blanket, a torch, ice scraper/de-icer, a warning triangle, high visibility vest, and an in-car phone charger).”
