SportsSnooker Star Ronnie O'Sullivan Mourns Loss of Pool Legend Mika Immonen

Ronnie O’Sullivan has expressed his condolences following the passing of Mika Immonen, the esteemed pool player who succumbed to cancer at the age of 52.

Immonen, a former world nineball pool champion, was highly regarded in the sport and had a close friendship with snooker icon O’Sullivan, who was deeply saddened by the news.

In a heartfelt message, O’Sullivan shared, “So saddened to learn about the loss of my friend Mika. He was a great individual whom I held in high regard. Our shared moments in the UK, including runs in the forest, were memorable. Mika was not only one of the greatest pool players of his time, but the personal experiences we had together will always stay with me. His absence is deeply felt today.”

Immonen made history as the first Finnish player to claim the World Nineball Championship in 2001. He further solidified his legacy by securing consecutive US Open Pool Championship titles in 2008 and 2009.

Known as The Iceman, Immonen represented Team Europe in the Mosconi Cup 15 times, contributing to four victories in the competition. He was recognized as the player of the decade for the 2000s.

His pinnacle achievement came in 2012 when he clinched the World Cup for Finland alongside Petri Makkonen. In 2023, Immonen received a cancer diagnosis.

Matchroom Pool expressed their condolences, stating, “Matchroom and the World Nineball Tour are deeply saddened by the passing of Mika Immonen. Known as The Iceman, he was widely celebrated as one of the game’s greatest players during his prime. His bold playing style and remarkable shot-making endeared him to fans worldwide.”

“A fierce competitor on the table, his most challenging battle was off the table when he faced cancer in 2023. Our thoughts are with Mika’s loved ones and supporters during this somber period. Rest in Peace, Iceman.”

Fans have honored Immonen’s memory, with one admirer remarking, “A fierce competitor on the table and a true gentleman off it, rest in peace Iceman.” Another added, “Heartbreaking news. May he find peace. Condolences to Mika’s family.”

In a social media post from two years ago, Immonen disclosed his cancer diagnosis, stating, “With great shock to myself, I am stepping back from upcoming tournaments as I prepare for the biggest battle of my life.”

“I endured excruciating pain and sleepless nights while competing and achieving quarterfinal placements in the all Japan championships last November. Following a series of tests, I received a stage IV cancer diagnosis in Costa Rica.”

“Though facing a challenging road to wellness, I remain optimistic and eager to return to the game. I am grateful for the support from my family, friends, fans, and sponsors. Your encouragement means everything to me. I cherish this game, the community, and my supporters.”
