“Smith and Panesar Clash Over ‘Sandpapergate’ Ahead of Ashes”

Sports"Smith and Panesar Clash Over 'Sandpapergate' Ahead of Ashes"

Monty Panesar and Steve Smith unexpectedly found themselves in a confrontation ahead of the Ashes series. The Australian captain sparked controversy by referencing the ‘Sandpapergate’ scandal during a press conference, drawing attention back to the infamous incident where Australian players were caught using sandpaper to tamper with the ball.

Panesar’s earlier remarks about the scandal were brought to light by Smith, who seemed to have orchestrated a question about them during his press briefing. Panesar had suggested that Ben Stokes and the England team should exploit Smith’s guilt over the scandal to unsettle him mentally.

During the press conference, Smith diverted from the cricket-related questions to address Panesar’s comments, making a reference to a TV show and downplaying the impact of the remarks on him. Smith, who was stripped of his captaincy following the sandpaper incident in 2018, is now leading the Australian team in the upcoming Test match in Perth.

Reacting to the exchange, Panesar, a former England spinner, emphasized that both he and Smith had made mistakes, with his being on a quiz show and Smith’s on the cricket field. Panesar, who gained attention for his performance on a quiz show in 2019, highlighted the distinction between their errors.

The Ashes series is set to commence in Perth, with England likely to opt for a pace-heavy bowling attack. Sky has announced discounted rates for its Essential TV and Sky Sports package for the upcoming season, offering extensive coverage of live matches across various sports leagues. The broadcasting service will feature a significant number of live Premier League games, Formula 1 races, darts tournaments, and golf events.
