A tragic incident unfolded as a result of a reckless challenge among friends, leading to a 19-year-old teenager being paralyzed for eight years before eventually succumbing to the consequences.
The sequence of events began when Sam Ballard and his companions were gathered in the backyard of his family residence and noticed a slug passing nearby. In a moment of jest, the group dared Sam to consume the slug.
Recounting the incident, one of Sam’s close friends, Jimmy Galvin, shared, “We were having a casual wine appreciation evening when a slug crossed our path. This prompted the discussion about eating it, and Sam took up the challenge, leading to the unfortunate outcome.”
Shortly after that ill-fated night in 2010, Sam began experiencing leg discomfort. His mother, Katie, recollected, “He mentioned eating the slug, speculating it could be the cause.” Initially unconcerned, Katie attempted to reassure her son, dismissing any potential harm from the slug ingestion.
However, it was later revealed that the slug carried rat lungworm, a parasite known as angiostrongyliasis, which impacted Sam’s central nervous system, leading to the development of eosinophilic meningoencephalitis.
Subsequently, the young man from Sydney began to exhibit severe weakness and pain in his legs, eventually succumbing to a form of meningitis, resulting in a 420-day coma.
Upon awakening, Sam discovered he was quadriplegic, rendering him incapable of independent eating or using the restroom, necessitating constant care and confinement to a wheelchair.
Formerly an avid rugby player, Sam spent the remainder of his life wheelchair-bound before his untimely death at the age of 28 in November 2018, surrounded by loved ones, with his final words expressing love to his mother.
Despite the tragic outcome, Sam’s mother, Katie, provided unwavering care for him post-coma, absolving his friends of any blame, highlighting their camaraderie during the party.
A witness to the incident recalled Sam’s last words before ingesting the slug, issuing a cautionary message to others. Encouraging vigilance among friends, Jimmy emphasized the potential dire consequences of dares and urged mutual care and responsibility.
