Holidaymakers with plans to visit a European Union destination have been cautioned about severe floods that have resulted in the deaths of at least three individuals. Bulgaria, specifically the Burgas Province seaside resort, has witnessed devastating flood damage, with distressing videos circulating online showing the impact on several villages. The southeastern part of Bulgaria and the Black Sea coast have been severely affected, leading to the declaration of a state of emergency.
Daniel Mitov, a Minister, confirmed the tragic deaths, explaining that one person was killed in a building basement as water rushed in, while the other two were rescuers responding to emergency calls. Search efforts to locate missing individuals have been intensified, with the Navy enlisted for assistance.
Regrettably, some victims may never be found as the floods swept away vehicles into the sea. Atanas Zapryanov, the Defense Minister, expressed readiness to deploy additional forces if requested by the Ministry of Interior.
The military has dispatched two boats with rescue teams to aid those in flooded areas. Heavy rainfall is predicted for the region in the next day, prompting the deployment of over 10 fire trucks in the broader Black Sea region, including Elenite, to assist affected residents, as reported by Bulgaria’s NOVA TV.
Footage captured the inundation of Elenite streets and a partially submerged car. In other European locations, including popular Spanish destinations like Ibiza, Formentera, and Valencia, flooding caused by heavy rain prompted a significant alert earlier in the week.
Travelers planning trips abroad were advised to exercise caution following the issuance of a red weather alert by forecasters. Disruptive weather conditions led to water leaking through the ceiling of Ibiza airport, disrupting baggage security operations. Additionally, cars were seen submerged in floodwaters as they tried to navigate through affected areas.
Similar situations have been reported in Greece, with areas like Corfu, Oiniades, and Aitoliko in Aitoloakarnania facing challenges. Some residents found themselves trapped in their homes due to rising water levels.
