Samsung has recently introduced its latest range of innovative foldable smartphones, presenting a potential challenge for Apple.
The tech giant from Korea has unveiled three new devices, with the flagship being the all-new Galaxy Z Fold 8, featuring a completely revamped design. Unlike its predecessors, this model showcases a shorter and wider “passport-style” design, which may appear unconventional when closed but offers a practical layout when unfolded.
The device boasts a spacious 7.6-inch display that resembles a compact tablet, ideal for activities like streaming movies, watching series, and gaming on the move.
This launch holds significance as Apple is anticipated to reveal its first foldable iPhone later this year, with rumors hinting at a similar design choice. Samsung’s preemptive move may give it an edge over its major competitor.
Beyond design, Samsung is also advancing in other aspects with the Galaxy Z Fold 8 being the thinnest and lightest Fold yet, weighing only 180g. It incorporates an enhanced hinge for improved durability and longevity.
The larger display on the unfolded device is enhanced with Vision Booster technology and an anti-reflective coating for better visibility under bright sunlight.
Powered by Qualcomm’s latest Snapdragon 8 Elite Gen 5 processor, the device is equipped with a 4,800mAh battery that can rapidly charge to 63% in just 30 minutes.
A dual-camera setup ensures quality photography, and Gorilla Glass provides protection against scratches and impacts. Samsung has integrated its latest Galaxy AI tools for enhanced photo editing, productivity features, and search capabilities.
The Galaxy Z Fold 8 is priced starting at £1,699 and is open for pre-orders. In contrast, Apple’s anticipated foldable iPhone is expected to arrive later at a higher estimated cost exceeding £2,000.
Alongside the Fold 8, Samsung has introduced the Galaxy Z Fold 8 Ultra, resembling last year’s Fold 7 but featuring upgraded hardware, including the Snapdragon 8 Elite Gen 5 chip and a significant camera improvement. The rear camera system now boasts a 200MP main sensor, a 50MP ultra-wide lens, and a 10MP telephoto camera, promising enhanced low-light photography and 8K video recording capabilities.
The Fold 8 Ultra also showcases a new Flex Titanium hinge and a refined display structure for increased strength and aesthetics. Samsung claims to have reduced the notorious crease while offering a smoother and more natural unfolding mechanism.
With a larger 5,000mAh battery, the Fold 8 Ultra ensures long-lasting power and can charge up to 67% in about 30 minutes, starting at £1,899.
Completing the lineup is the Galaxy Z Flip 8, retaining Samsung’s popular clamshell design but now thinner and lighter. Improvements include an upgraded external cover display, a robust aluminum hinge, faster performance, and enhanced camera functionalities.
