Russian drone assaults on Kyiv, the Ukrainian capital, and its neighboring areas have extended into the fifth consecutive day, causing disruptions to daily life with continuous air raid sirens. On Monday, Governor Tymur Tkachenko reported that the attacks resulted in injuries to four individuals and inflicted damage on warehouse facilities, an apartment building, and a retail establishment in the Kyiv region.
The region has been plagued by numerous jet engine-powered drones in recent days, leading to fatalities among residents and causing destruction to homes and warehouses. A significant incident occurred when a Russian drone strike on an ammunition depot triggered explosions, resulting in the loss of 38 lives.
Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskiy emphasized on Sunday that the relentless drone attacks were intended to wear down the Ukrainian population. Zelenskiy disclosed that Russia had launched nearly 1,500 drones at Ukraine within a span of four days, with over half of them being jet-powered.
In a separate event, a Russian strike ignited a fire at a terminal operated by courier service Nova Poshta in the southern Odesa region as confirmed by Governor Oleh Kiper on Monday. Moreover, in Kryvyi Rih, a drone attack on an industrial site resulted in injuries to two individuals, according to a local official.
Both Ukraine and Russia have escalated attacks on economic targets recently, focusing on major e-commerce entities and retailers. Russia has targeted warehouses belonging to Ukraine’s leading supermarket chains, primary postal service, and home goods stores. In retaliation, Ukraine also targeted Russian infrastructure, with a logistics hub in Yekaterinburg enduring a drone attack, as reported by the local governor on Monday.
The intensified air attacks by Russia during the summer have exploited Ukraine’s lack of interceptors capable of countering ballistic missiles. This approach, coupled with the increased daytime drone activities, has disrupted the daily lives of Kyiv residents, leading to the halting of metro services and the upheaval of routines.
Numerous individuals, including 38-year-old nurse and psychologist Yulianna Oliynyk, found themselves stranded on metro platforms due to air raid alerts. Oliynyk, accompanied by her two sons, faced delays while attempting to reach a school ahead of the academic year, with the disruptions forcing them to seek refuge with relatives the previous night.
Expressing her uncertainty amidst the chaos, Oliynyk contemplated the possibility of spending the night at the metro station near the lyceum, reflecting on the challenges faced during the previous academic year and the current predicament.
