Following a heavy downpour, large rocks were dislodged onto vehicles traveling on a dangerous road in Tenerife, causing significant damage and raising concerns among local officials. Startling images captured the aftermath of the incident, showing two cars wrecked on the treacherous TF-82 route that links Tamaimo and Santiago del Teide on the popular Spanish island.
Despite the severity of the crash, the two drivers involved narrowly escaped tragedy, escaping unscathed as their vehicles bore the brunt of the impact. One car’s rear end was completely flattened, while the other sustained damage to its front, with a large boulder resting precariously on the hood near the right headlight.
A third image depicted debris scattered across the road, making it impassable, with two individuals in the distance providing perspective on the size of the rocks scattered by the landslide.
The mayor of Santiago del Teide, Emilio Navarro, expressed frustration on social media over the recurring incidents on the hazardous TF-82 route. He emphasized that repeated warnings had been issued regarding the dangers posed by the road and urged authorities to take necessary action to prevent future disasters.
Motorists navigating the route, accompanied by police and maintenance teams from the Cabildo (Island Council of Tenerife) for cleanup operations, face heightened risks due to the steep rock face along certain sections of the roadway.
This incident is not the first time the perilous TF-82 route has been impacted, as it was closed just a month earlier following a similar event.
In another event in Tenerife last April, fifteen residents were evacuated after a landslide in the island’s north-east, where a large rock fell onto a property. The incident occurred along the TF-13 road in La Laguna, between Bajamar and Punta del Hidalgo, prompting authorities to manage traffic delays during the investigation.
According to the World Health Organization (WHO), landslides are triggered by natural phenomena or human activities, causing soil, rocks, or debris to move down slopes rapidly, with mudslides and debris flows being common types of fast-moving landslides.
