“New Freely Box Threatens Sky Q Dominance”

Tech"New Freely Box Threatens Sky Q Dominance"

Sky Q has maintained its dominance in the TV market in the UK for over a decade, solidifying its position as one of the most favored TV devices among users. A new competitor may soon emerge offering comparable features without the need for subscription fees.

Freely, integrated into many new TVs, enables households to access live and on-demand content without requiring an aerial, as content is delivered via the internet. While initially accessible only through the purchase of a new television, plans are underway to introduce a dedicated set-top box that can connect to existing TVs, potentially posing a challenge to Sky Q.

A Humax-manufactured Freely box has surfaced online, promising free TV access and the ability to record programs similar to Sky Q. Additionally, the device is reportedly 4K-ready, promising high-definition visuals superior to standard HD quality.

Although the starting price for the Freely box may exceed £250, once acquired, users can enjoy all Freely content at no additional cost. While an exact release date for the new Freely boxes remains undisclosed, they are expected to hit retailers shortly.

Notably, a listing for the Freely box that briefly appeared online has since been removed, hinting at a potential premature reveal. Any developments will be promptly shared as they unfold.

CEO Jonathan Thompson of Everyone TV expressed that Freely aims to democratize free television access, expanding to “plug-in and stream” devices to broaden accessibility without necessitating TV upgrades or paid subscriptions.

Despite Freely’s similarities to Sky Glass, Sky Stream, and Sky Q, it lacks access to premium sports, movies, or boxsets from channels like Sky Atlantic and Sky Max. Moreover, the platform does not support external services such as Netflix within its interface.

For access to premium content, users must subscribe to Sky’s plans, starting as low as £15 per month and often including Netflix as part of the package.
