NASA’s Artemis 2 mission to the moon faces a setback due to a significant issue discovered during a recent test run. Engineers found a “liquid hydrogen leak” at a core stage interface while conducting a wet dress rehearsal on Monday. The leak was detected during tanking, leading to a pause in operations to address the issue.

The final countdown was interrupted around five minutes before launch as the leak rate increased, according to a statement from NASA Administrator Jared Isaacman. Additional concerns arose, including the need to retorque a valve related to the Orion crew module hatch, causing delays. Some minor interruptions in audio communications and equipment malfunctions due to cold temperatures were also noted but did not halt the rehearsal.

Isaacman emphasized the importance of such tests in identifying and resolving challenges ahead of the actual launch. NASA now aims for a March launch window for Artemis 2 following another wet dress rehearsal. Agency leaders plan to discuss the initial results from Monday’s test during a news conference on Tuesday.

The Artemis program aims to send astronauts to the Moon for scientific exploration, economic benefits, and to pave the way for future crewed missions to Mars. The upcoming 10-day manned mission will mark the first journey around the Moon since Apollo 17 in 1972. Subsequent missions under Artemis, like Artemis 3, will focus on returning humans to the lunar surface and constructing the Lunar Gateway space station for extended operations.

Artemis I, launched in November 2022, tested NASA’s Space Launch System (SLS) rocket by sending an empty Orion crew capsule on a lunar orbit. The SLS, with its core stage containing liquid hydrogen and liquid oxygen, is vital for direct missions to the Moon. The crew for Artemis 2 includes NASA astronauts Reid Wiseman, Victor Glover, Christina Koch, and Canadian Space Agency astronaut Jeremy Hansen.

Isaacman reiterated the commitment to lunar exploration as a step towards establishing a sustainable presence on the Moon. The mission will conclude with the Orion capsule splashing down in the Pacific Ocean, with recovery operations conducted by NASA and the US Navy.
