A man has been sentenced to over eight years in prison for a brutal and planned attack on his father in a prison encounter. Lee Spence, 25, assaulted his father at HMP Perth, causing a severe wound that required more than 40 stitches. He admitted to striking his father with a blade, leading to an attempted murder charge.
During the trial at the High Court in Edinburgh, it was revealed that Spence attacked his father due to alleged past mistreatment of his mother. Despite having no prior relationship, both men were inmates in the same prison wing. The judge described the assault as savage and unprovoked, emphasizing the lack of remorse shown by Spence.
Lord Renucci handed down a sentence of eight years and three months in custody, with an additional three years of supervision upon release. The court highlighted Spence’s criminal history and warned him about the consequences of not addressing his behavior. Spence’s father received medical treatment at Ninewells Hospital in Dundee following the incident.
Spence’s defense attorney acknowledged his client’s troubled upbringing and early acceptance of responsibility for the crime. The court recognized the difficult family background Spence came from and the adverse experiences he faced.
