A 59-year-old man, Nigel Dewale, has confessed to sending offensive racist messages to England women’s footballer Jess Carter via social media during the Euro 2025 event last summer. Dewale acknowledged sending hateful and harmful messages to the professional footballer during his appearance in front of magistrates. The police had previously characterized these messages as “disgusting and appalling.”
Hailing from Great Harwood, Lancashire, Dewale pleaded guilty to one count of malicious communications and possession of a weapon in a private location during his court appearance at Blackburn magistrates. His sentencing is scheduled for March 25. Jess Carter, aged 28, was a key player in the successful Lionesses squad that retained their title last summer.
The court was informed that in July of the previous year, during the Women’s Euros, the UK Football Policing Unit initiated an inquiry into multiple malicious and hateful messages directed at England defender Carter. Detectives were able to trace some of these messages back to Dewale’s residence. Following his arrest in August, Dewale was subsequently charged.
Cheshire Police Chief Constable Mark Roberts, who leads football policing for the NPCC, emphasized that everyone is accountable for their actions and words, including on social media. Roberts condemned Dewale’s offensive messages, which caused emotional distress to Miss Carter and her family. PC Dan Fish, a dedicated football officer at Lancashire Police, echoed the sentiment, stating that hate in any form is not tolerated, and perpetrators like Dewale will face the consequences of their actions.
The Football Association responded to the situation, acknowledging Dewale’s admission of sending abusive and discriminatory messages to Jess Carter. They stressed that such behavior, whether online or in person, will not be accepted. The FA expressed gratitude to the authorities for their thorough handling of the case and reiterated their commitment to supporting players affected by online abuse.
Jess Carter, speaking after the semi-final match against Italy last summer, reflected on the challenges she faced due to online abuse. She emphasized the need to speak out against racism and highlighted the importance of unity and support from fans. Carter’s statement was inspired by her desire to stand up against discrimination and pave the way for future generations.
