“Man Conquers Frozen Waterfall Amidst Arctic Weather”

Updates"Man Conquers Frozen Waterfall Amidst Arctic Weather"

A man successfully climbed a frozen waterfall in a national park amidst Britain’s ongoing cold Arctic weather. Mick Ellerton, 48, accomplished the climb at Gordale Scar, near Malham Cove in the Yorkshire Dales, after the waterfall froze due to plummeting temperatures.

This remarkable achievement coincided with an impending severe weather event, as Storm Goretti was forecasted to bring heavy snow and 90mph winds across the country, prompting the Met Office to issue various weather warnings. The heavy snowfall earlier in the week resulted in numerous school closures and isolated some remote communities in the northern regions.

Ellerton praised the tranquility of the Yorkshire Dales compared to popular tourist destinations like the Peak District, describing the national park as exceptionally beautiful. Reflecting on his icy waterfall ascent, he mentioned that such ideal conditions rarely occur, emphasizing the importance of experience in identifying safe climbing routes.

As an instructor at Lost Earth Adventures and a volunteer for a cave rescue charity, Ellerton’s passion for ice climbing dates back to his childhood in Australia. Residing in Skipton, North Yorkshire, he showcased his expertise by climbing the frozen waterfall multiple times this week. Apart from personal enjoyment, Ellerton highlighted how mountain climbing hones his rescue skills for assisting the Upper Wharfedale Fell Rescue Association.

Encouraging outdoor exploration, Ellerton stressed the significance of safety measures and proper equipment. He emphasized the physical and mental health benefits of outdoor activities while urging individuals to venture out responsibly. Meanwhile, ahead of Storm Goretti’s impact, the Met Office warned of significant snowfall in parts of Wales and the Midlands, advising caution due to the potential disruptions caused by rain and strong winds nationwide.
