A man aged 59 passed away following an encounter with law enforcement in Bootle, Merseyside. The incident occurred just before 12:24 pm on Monday, January 5, when Merseyside Police officers detained the individual on Southport Road. The man collapsed and lost consciousness during the interaction. Despite receiving CPR from the officers and being transported to the hospital, he was declared deceased one hour later.
Merseyside Police has referred the case to the Independent Office for Police Conduct (IOPC) and notified the man’s relatives. The police expressed their sympathies to the family. At the scene on Southport Road, officers and paramedics were present, and a section of the road was closed off as emergency crews operated.
Witnesses reported seeing the man receiving CPR on a driveway before being taken to the hospital. Detectives were observed entering and exiting a nearby house, and armed police were also spotted in the vicinity. Residents recounted the swift arrival of police and ambulances, with one mentioning the ongoing resuscitation efforts. Paramedic equipment was visible on the driveway, and forensic officers later arrived at the location, which remains sealed off.
