“Majority of UK Would Opt to Rejoin EU in New Referendum”

Politics"Majority of UK Would Opt to Rejoin EU in New Referendum"

A recent survey by Deltapoll for The Mirror revealed that if there were another Brexit referendum, a majority of people in the UK would opt to rejoin the European Union. The survey found that 58% of respondents would vote to return to the EU.

Support for reversing Brexit was particularly strong among younger demographics, with 86% of 18 to 24-year-olds in favor of rejoining the bloc. On the other hand, older voters showed more inclination to stay outside the EU, with 51% of 55 to 64-year-olds and 58% of over-65s preferring to remain out.

Political party supporters also had varying views on the matter, with Conservative and Reform voters leaning towards maintaining the status quo, while Labour and Lib Dem supporters showed a strong desire to rejoin the EU.

Geographically, every region in the UK showed a preference for returning to the EU, with Scotland leading at 73% support, followed by London and Wales. Even in regions like the Midlands and the North, where support was lower, the majority still favored rejoining the EU.

Amidst these sentiments, UK Labour Party leader Keir Starmer has been working on improving the UK’s relationship with the EU, including securing a trade deal with Brussels and rejoining the Erasmus+ program for British students to study abroad in Europe.

While there have been calls for closer ties with the EU, including the idea of a new customs union, the UK government has emphasized that rejoining the single market and customs union are non-negotiable “red lines.” Despite this, discussions on strengthening the UK-EU relationship continue.
