The Italian Football Federation has joined other countries in withdrawing its endorsement of FIFA President Gianni Infantino. The FIGC announced it will no longer support Infantino’s reelection bid in March due to recent FIFA governance initiatives and international competition development efforts. Infantino faced criticism for his abandoned plan to sell World Cup stakes to private investors, leading to pressure for his resignation. The FIGC President, Giovanni Malagò, emphasized the importance of upholding soccer values such as merit and solidarity, aligning with UEFA and other European federations. Several national soccer federations, including those of England, Wales, Ireland, and Norway, have also withdrawn their support for Infantino. Despite some backing from FIFA member federations like Morocco and Qatar, challenges to Infantino’s reelection are expected as the deadline for nominations approaches. UEFA is likely to retract its boycott threat against FIFA competitions following assurances that Infantino’s controversial World Cup sell-off plan will not be revisited. The decision is expected to allow European teams to participate in upcoming tournaments, including the FIFA Under-20 Women’s World Cup. Infantino faced global backlash over his proposed $20 billion subsidiary controlling FIFA commercial rights, which was swiftly retracted following opposition from UEFA and other soccer governing bodies. UEFA had expressed concerns over Infantino’s leadership and hinted at blocking his reelection next year.
