Sports"Grey Dawning Triumphs in Emotional Betfair Chase"

Harry Skelton was visibly moved by Grey Dawning’s impressive victory in the £200,000 Betfair Chase at Haydock. The highly anticipated race on Saturday evolved into a thrilling showdown between last year’s top two contenders, with Handstands also in contention.

Grey Dawning, who had been defeated by Royale Pagaille the previous year, dominated the race in the final stretch, pulling ahead by two-and-three-quarter lengths over its rival. Skelton, touched by the performance, was on the verge of tears, especially since his wife Bridget had just given birth to their daughter Anna a few days earlier.

Expressing his joy, Skelton acknowledged the efforts of Clare and Tom (Messenger), the assistant who diligently trained Grey Dawning for the race. Reflecting on the recent events in his personal life, he shared, “Last year was disappointing due to the weather conditions, but today he was exceptional. It’s been a whirlwind with the arrival of our daughter Anna. I’m immensely proud of Bridget and can’t wait to get back home.”

Skelton, who leads the trainers’ table with over £1.2 million in prize money since April, commended Grey Dawning’s stellar performance, adding £113,870 to his total winnings. He remarked, “I had a strong feeling he would deliver today, and he certainly did. While we were a year behind our expectations from last year, watching the race today was truly gratifying.”

Acknowledging the emotional turmoil Skelton had experienced in the past 48 hours, he received praise for his dedication to owner Robert Kirkland. Skelton emphasized the significance of owners in the sport, stating, “Owners are the lifeblood of this game, and providing them with moments like this is truly rewarding.”
