Two dangerous criminals, Matthew Armstrong and Daniel Washbourne, have escaped from HMP Leyhill in South Gloucestershire on New Year’s Day. The fugitives, who were serving time for serious offenses, are currently on the run. Avon and Somerset Police are actively seeking the escaped prisoners, with a third inmate also suspected of fleeing from custody.
One of the absconders, Aaron Thomas, was apprehended in Bristol and is scheduled to appear in court. Surveillance footage captured Armstrong and Washbourne casually leaving the open prison together, donning hats as they made their getaway.
The trio made their escape between 5pm and 8pm last Thursday. Armstrong, a convicted murderer serving a life sentence, was found guilty in 2009 for the killing of Paul Smith in Rugby. Open prisons like HMP Leyhill offer minimal security, allowing eligible inmates to engage in work, education, and resettlement activities outside the facility.
Authorities have obtained CCTV footage of the escapees on New Year’s Day and are urging the public to provide any relevant information. Police have initiated national alerts and intelligence operations to track the fugitives’ movements. Citizens are advised not to approach Armstrong and Washbourne if spotted.
Armstrong, identified as a white male with ginger hair and distinctive scars on his forehead, has ties to Warwickshire. Washbourne, described as white with brown hair and a slim build, has links to Herefordshire and a history of offenses including false imprisonment.
The search for the escaped prisoners continues as law enforcement agencies work diligently to ensure their swift apprehension.
