In early December in Saskatoon, the absence of snow didn’t deter my admiration as we adorned our home with holiday lights. The belief that “Home is where the heart is” resonated deeply with me after three years in Canada, as we finally felt a sense of belonging.
Upon entering the house for the first time during our house hunt, my husband, teenager, and I were captivated by the abundance of sunlight streaming in through numerous windows, casting a warm glow that embraced every corner, including the basement. The genuine remark from my child, “Ma, this feels like home,” brought a rare smile to my kid’s face after a long time.
Amidst our house-hunting journey, this particular house stood out for its simplicity, coziness, and charm, with a front lawn gracefully extending and a backyard adorned with swaying poplar trees. The allure of the windows added to its appeal, making it the perfect fit for us.
The reminiscent sight of our backyard, adorned with Christmas lights and surrounded by greenery and fallen leaves, transported me back to my childhood home in India. Recreating similar memories with my family filled me with immense gratitude for the opportunity.
The transition from our previous home in Delhi to Saskatoon brought about a mix of emotions for my family. Our Delhi home, an apartment with large windows and spacious balconies, held countless memories and witnessed our growth as a family.
Leaving behind our cherished home in India to move to Saskatoon felt like leaving a piece of our hearts behind, especially with the transitory nature of renting. The rental apartment lacked the warmth and personal touch we yearned for, accentuated by the challenges of settling into a new country amidst the pandemic.
However, the recent purchase of our house in September marked a turning point, providing us with a sense of permanence and stability. Our new home in Saskatoon symbolizes a fresh beginning, where we can create new memories and milestones, anchoring ourselves in a place that has now become our sanctuary.
Saskatoon has transformed from a mere location on the map to a place of hope and belonging for us, teaching us that home is not just a birthplace but a conscious choice where we find solace and build our future.
