Video footage has captured a moment of shock as an explosion occurred at the reception area of a building in Istanbul, a popular holiday destination.
The incident involved a suspicious package that was delivered to the reception of a residential building in the city. The package was placed on the front desk in the lobby, and CCTV footage recorded the attempt by a man to open it before the explosion took place.
Upon detonation, the small package exploded, injuring the man and two building staff members with smoke and flames. The force of the blast caused items on the front desk to be thrown across the reception area on the ground floor, leaving behind debris, documents, and shattered glass pieces scattered around. As the smoke cleared, the two staff members hurriedly left the area while the man who tried to open the package backed away, covering his mouth.
The reception area sustained significant damage, with a noticeable clean white patch where the package had been placed. According to reports from The Sun, CCTV footage revealed that a delivery driver had left the package shortly before the explosion.
Both staff members suffered minor injuries from the blast. Emergency services responded promptly to the scene at the building in Zeytinburnu, Istanbul, on January 11. Officers, paramedics, and firefighters arrived at the reception area to assist.
The injured staff members received initial treatment at the site before being transferred to a nearby hospital. They have since been discharged from medical care. Following the incident, the police cordoned off the building, and forensic teams conducted an investigation in collaboration with law enforcement officers.
The cause of the explosion is currently unknown. Harun Arkin, one of the injured staff members, described the sequence of events leading up to the explosion, noting the absence of a company logo on the courier’s box. He mentioned becoming suspicious when the box arrived and the resident of the apartment also expressing concern about its contents. Arkin recounted that the box exploded during inspection, resulting in an eye injury for him.
Berra Köse, another staff member present during the explosion, shared her account, mentioning the resident’s attempt to open the package in the lobby and the suspicions surrounding the courier’s delivery.
The staff members were recognized and rewarded by the EVA Group, responsible for building security, for their actions in averting a potentially more disastrous outcome.
