A woman, previously employed as a teacher, broke down in tears during her court sentencing after being found guilty of engaging in a sexual relationship with a 17-year-old student. The court proceedings revealed that the teacher, McKenna Kindred, initiated flirtatious interactions with the student via social media, leading to explicit text exchanges in 2022.
Evidence presented in court showed that Kindred, now 27 years old, engaged in sexual activities with the student at her home in Spokane, Washington, while her husband was away on a hunting trip in November 2022. The encounter reportedly lasted for three and a half hours, followed by a shower and casual time together.
Their illicit relationship began in June of the same year when the student started following Kindred on Instagram, leading to the exchange of explicit messages. The situation came to light when a friend of the student discovered the messages, including one where the teacher expressed sadness when the student had to leave her room.
During police questioning, the student revealed that he visited Kindred’s home in the evening, starting with kissing and escalating to sexual acts on the couch before moving to Kindred’s bedroom. The student’s mother mentioned that Kindred shared intimate photos, including ones showing her breasts, with the student, who reciprocated with explicit videos.
Following the revelation of their relationship, rumors circulated among the school community, with friends of the student sharing screenshots of messages in December 2022. Kindred also sent messages expressing her desire for the student to be in her room and her enjoyment of physical contact with him.
Subsequently, Kindred admitted to engaging in sexual misconduct with a minor and inappropriate communication with a minor as part of a plea agreement reached in March 2024. Despite the charges, Kindred received a sentence of two years probation, a $700 fine, and a requirement to register as a sex offender for a decade.
In a statement to the court, Kindred expressed remorse for her actions, acknowledging the distress caused to those involved and the detrimental impact on her life, including the loss of her career and relationships. She also highlighted the toll the incident took on her mental health.
Despite the legal repercussions, Kindred’s husband stood by her side throughout the ordeal. Following her arrest, the couple relocated from their apartment to a rural area near Spokane. Later, they moved to Idaho, where they purchased a new home in June 2024. Kindred voluntarily surrendered her teaching license amidst an investigation by the Idaho Standards Commission, leaving her current employment status uncertain.
