Dolly Parton’s journey from humble beginnings to success has not only inspired her music but also led to the creation of a theme park and podcast. Now, a new musical titled “Dolly: A True Original Musical” is set to debut on Broadway later this year. This musical, as described by Parton herself, will narrate her life experiences through her own words and the songs that have influenced her.
In a recent video announcement, the 80-year-old singer assured fans that the musical will stay true to her life story. She emphasized that it is not just about glamour but delves into her roots, struggles, triumphs, and personal growth.
The production will feature a blend of new songs specifically composed for the show and some of Parton’s iconic hits such as “I Will Always Love You,” “Jolene,” “Coat of Many Colors,” and “9 to 5.” Performances are slated to kick off in New York City on December 7 and are scheduled to run until November 21, 2027.
Parton expressed her excitement, calling this opportunity a dream come true as she nears her seventh decade in the music industry. With a prolific career that includes over 3,000 songs and more than 100 million albums sold worldwide, she is a celebrated figure in both the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame and the Country Music Hall of Fame.
The musical, which premiered in Nashville last summer to a sold-out six-week run, has garnered overwhelming praise. Director Bartlett Sher highlighted the strong emotional connection audiences feel towards Dolly, showcasing how she has inspired and brought joy to many.
This show aims to present an unfiltered portrayal of Parton’s life, going beyond the glitz and glamour associated with her persona. Tickets for the Broadway show will be available to the public starting Friday, July 10.
