Tennessee has announced plans to rename Nashville International Airport in honor of the late country music legend Dolly Parton. The decision follows a social media campaign by fans advocating for the airport to be named after Parton. Tennessee Governor Bill Lee has engaged with Parton’s team regarding this renaming initiative, which aims to celebrate Parton’s profound impact on the state.
Governor Lee expressed that Dolly Parton’s remarkable life is deeply intertwined with Tennessee’s identity. He emphasized that renaming the Nashville International Airport after Parton aligns with the state’s welcoming nature, showcasing the enduring legacy of her music, generosity, faith, and kindness to travelers from around the world.
The proposal to rename the airport will be deliberated at a meeting on September 17, addressing the current Metropolitan Nashville Airport Authority’s naming policy. This policy typically requires a two-year period after an individual’s passing before naming any property in their honor, as reported by The New York Times.
The Tennessee Department of Tourist Development is in full support of this renaming endeavor. Mark Ezell, the commissioner, described Dolly Parton as a pivotal figure in promoting Tennessee tourism, noting her role as a prominent ambassador for the state. He highlighted that Parton’s influence has introduced millions of travelers to Tennessee’s music, scenic mountains, and warm hospitality even before they visit the state.
Dolly Parton, born on January 19, 1946, in Pittman Center, Tennessee, spent her formative years in a humble one-room cabin in Locust Ridge. Her musical journey began at the age of 13 when she started performing at the Grand Ole Opry in Nashville. Over the years, she crafted timeless hits like “Coat of Many Colors,” “Jolene,” and “I Will Always Love You,” solidifying her status as one of the top-selling female artists in history with over 100 million records sold. Parton’s illustrious career garnered her 11 Grammy Awards, including a prestigious Lifetime Achievement Award.
